I love Damasks! They are amazing designs as they are extremely versatile and can be used in modern or traditional interiors and are the perfect patterns for any age category whether it be for a child’s bedroom or a main formal dining area or entrance way.
Damasks can solely act as a background design or they can be the main focal point of a room.
Damasks derive their name from their supposed origin in the city of Damascus, Syria.
Historically, a countries heritage was often reflected within the center of the damask motif which was a tell tale sign of which country the damask originally was designed.
In France, often swans and bees were used in the central part of a French damask while laurel leaves trailed and looped around these motifs creating a classic damask design. Most damask designs portrayed an hour glass shape with some sort of leaf trail that surrounded a unique central design. This type of design layout was often known as a type of ” diaper” design. The trailing leaf shapes and the central motifs where the key design factors that determined the country of origin. As France used French styled motifs like bees, swans and the famous laurel leaves in damasks other countries like Italy most often used images of dogs, musical instruments and food for there central design features. In England, horses, fruits and roses were the most likely motifs to be found in English damask fabrics or wallpapers. Today, many styles have more organic shapes and flowers which are versatile for all styles, even loft interiors as seen below.
